DIY american flag jean shorts

4th of July is almost here & we are so excited to be on a boat, drinkin’ a beer, and celebrating good ol’ America.

Here’s a step-by-step on how to create your own patriotic shorts!

buy a pair of old jeans from a thrift shop (these are old school Old Navy jean capris from Goodwill)

cut them into shorts ~ make sure not to cut them too short the first time, you can always cut more off later & get the perfect length

fray the bottoms of the shorts to get rid of the straight cut lines

spray paint the left side bright blue

use star stencils (found this sheet at Michael’s)

put the stencils over the blue & spray white. it takes several coats & careful spraying to get perfect stars. as you can see, these aren’t exactly picture perfect, but after a couple tries & coats you’ll get it.

spray paint the right side white

add some red lines & boom! all-American jorts.

you can even use the leftover denim to create a braided bracelet!

studded shorts

Ever since Rihanna showed up at Coachella with these ridiculous studded shorts, the trend caught on everywhere. Studded, destroyed, grungy denim shorts are definitely the casual trend this spring and summer. Celebs have been spotted wearing them and showing off their fun, edgy vibe.

The best part about this trend is it’s so simple to do it yourself! While there are brands that sell pre-studded shorts, you can turn an old pair of shorts, a pair of thrift store jean shorts, or even a pair of old jeans that you turn into cutoffs into studded shorts! In fact, the older the denim, the better.

Check out Studs and Spikes for tons of different studs, spikes, and other accessories to vamp up your shorts. If you need some instructions or ideas, there are tons of sites – including this website - that can teach you how to make the shorts & give you some ideas. Try grabbing an old pair of outdated shorts and adding some studs for a completely new look! Here’s some pre-studded shorts if you’re not in the mood for a DIY project.
