a night at chicago mosaic school

A few weeks ago Katelyn and R went to the Chicago Mosaic School in …. Chicago! We bought a Living Social deal for a BYOB Mosaic making class.. sounded fun! And it was. I will say that making mosaics is much harder than you think it would be… But this place is amazing! Its the ONLY mosaic school in the US and they have artists from all over the world studying and creating art in this amazing space.

While we were there there was a Chicago exhibit going on.. how amazing are these?

Time for us to begin…. I chose a sailboat as my design and Katelyn chose a design-y design for hers. First we gathered our glass and materials.

As it turns out, I am God- awful at mosaic-making and Katelyn is pretty good.

Hysterical, right? What is that even?

Katelyn’s is actually a piece of art. Since I finished mine quickly (there was no point, mine was a lost cause) I made another quick one for my bathroom- I have a light blue and yellow theme going on in there. This is still not great, but at least it will match!

And there you have it. Ha. Our neighbor did a Michigan M, which I thought was picture-worthy. Plus she did it in about 6 minutes… awesome.

So I guess the moral of the story is that I am not good at mosaics. It was a really fun night and the teachers here were great- they gave great instruction and gave me some  really nice unwarranted compliments on my horrible pieces of ‘art’. Honestly though, they were great, they even provided some snacks!  I highly recommend taking a class here, its a fun way to pass some time and create something unique. We also got to witness some amazing mosaic artists from around the world working on the most intricate pieces… we were in awe. Even if you don’t take a class there, it is such a cool place just to pop in and look around at the current exhibit. But- I recommend the class! We got to cut glass and get creative for a few hours on a Friday night with some wine. A+ in my book!

preppy mani

the other day, I was bored. and when I am bored, I paint my nails (duh). I started off with just using China Glaze Liquid Lace black with an American Apparel Neon yellow accent finger.

I left it like that, went to Chipotle, and then decided it looked like I was going to a University of Iowa football game. (Go Hawkeyes?) So I decided to use my Orly black and white stripers to add some simple, argyle striping (again, I had just eaten Chipotle so I wasn’t feeling too aggressive), and this is how it turned out:

And then the next day I coincidentally wore an argyle sweater (how preppy) that had yellow and white accents in it. So I matched.

It was nice, simple, clean, and my co-workers didn’t seem distracted by it. Score.
